Manmohan Singh meets service chiefs
The chiefs of all three wings of the Army, Navy and Air Force today met Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and reviewed him of the security situation in the country.
During the meeting, which took place at the Prime Minister''s office, Dr. Singh took stock of the possible conventional military threat scenarios and the counter- measures that the Army, Navy and the Air Force had put in place along the borders, Defence Ministry sources said.
Service matters including the recommendation of the pay commission were also discussed during the meeting. (ANI)
US Senator John Kerry to meet Manmohan Singh today
US Senator John Kerry will meet Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh here today.
Kerry, who arrived here on Sunday, is expected to hold discussions on the situation arising out of the Mumbai terror strikes.
During his visit, Kerry is also scheduled to meet External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and other leaders.
Kerry''s visit to India comes a couple of days after the trip by US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte who reiterated Washington''s message to Islamabad to "act forcefully" and to bring perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks to book.
Manmohan Singh to look after I & B Ministry
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will hold charge of the Information and Broadcasting Ministry during the indisposition of Priyaranjan Dasmunsi, who has been admitted to hospital following a heart attack last month.
A Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said Dr. Singh would hold this charge till Dasmunsi is able to resume his work.
Dasmunsi, who is undergoing treatment, will continue to hold the rank of a Cabinet Minister without portfolio.
Manmohan Singh rules out immediate cut in fuel prices
The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Tuesday, ruled out any immediate cut of fuel prices, saying that such a measure could not be considered till oil PSUs stop making losses.
Speaking to the media team accompanying him on his return home from official visits to Oman and Qatar, Dr. Singh said that there were "limits to which government can go on subsidising".
"When we see that the Indian oil companies are able to sustain a reduction, that will be the right (time for such a) decision," Singh told reporters.

Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh met the chiefs of the three wings of the defence service - the Army, the Navy and the Air Force – in New Delhi on Saturday.
Dr. Singh and Defence Minister A.K. Antony met Navy Chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta, Fali H. Major, Chief of India''s Air Force and Deepak Kapoor, Chief of the Army Staff.
The chiefs met to review and to address matters of national security on the day of the combined Commanders'' Conference.

PM arrives in Beijing to attend ASEM-7
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on Thursday arrived in Beijing to attend the seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM-7) scheduled from Friday after his three-day visit to Japan.
On his arrival to Beijing, Dr. Singh said, “This is the first time that I am attending the Asian-European summit as a Prime Minister.”
“I sincerely hope that this meeting of minds between Europe and Asia will produce a solution to many global problems including the current global financial crisis,” Dr. Singh added.
India, Japan economic cooperation not at the cost of any third country
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his Japanese counterpart Taro Aso at Tokyo said that the deepening of strategic and economic ties between India and Japan is not at the cost of any third country and not at least against China.
“Economic cooperation and security cooperation between India and Japan are not at the cost of any third country least of all China,” said a joint statement issued at the end of the summit talks between Dr. Singh and Aso at Tokyo on Wednesday.
Dr. Singh said that China is not a competitor to India.
Global crisis needs coordinated efforts, says Manmohan Singh
Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today called for a coordinated response to deal with the current global recessionary trends.
While addressing the business delegates at a luncheon organised by the Japan-India Business Cooperation Committee and the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry here, Dr. Singh said that the need of hour is to prevent the liquidity crisis from further shattering the confidence of investors.
